Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26, across the U.S. That leaves families about three weeks to plan the meal, travel and the turkey thaw.

Key Points

  • Thanksgiving is on Thursday, November 26, 2026.
  • Black Friday follows one day later, on November 27.
  • A big frozen turkey can need up to six days to thaw.

Why Thanksgiving 2026 Lands on November 26

Thanksgiving always falls on the fourth Thursday of November. This year, that Thursday is November 26.

The rule goes back to 1941, when Congress fixed the date by law. Before that, the holiday moved around from year to year.

President Abraham Lincoln first called for a national day of thanks in 1863. You can read his original Thanksgiving proclamation at the National Archives.

Today, Thanksgiving is one of the 11 federal holidays listed in 5 U.S.C. 6103. As our Election Day story explains, not every big day makes that list.

The Parade Turns 100 This Year

This year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a big one. It marks the 100th parade since the event began in 1924.

The count reached 100 only now because the parade paused from 1942 to 1944 during World War II. The show airs on NBC and streams on Peacock on Thanksgiving morning.

How Much Will Dinner Cost?

The yearly cost survey from the American Farm Bureau usually comes out in mid-November. Until then, last year’s numbers give a helpful guide.

$55.18was the average cost of a classic Thanksgiving dinner for 10 people in 2025, according to the American Farm Bureau.

In that survey, a 16-pound frozen turkey cost about $21.50, or $1.34 per pound. Prices change by store and region, so compare a few flyers before you buy.

Plan Your Turkey Thaw

A frozen turkey takes longer to thaw than most people expect. The USDA suggests one day in the fridge for every 4 to 5 pounds.

So a 16-pound bird needs about four days. To be safe, move it to the fridge by Sunday, November 22.

Add thaw reminder to calendar

Short on time? The USDA turkey guide also covers a cold water method. It takes about 30 minutes per pound, and you change the water every 30 minutes.

Turkey thaw calculator

Always cook the turkey until it reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit inside. Check the thickest part of the breast and the inner thigh.

Good to know. Never thaw a turkey on the kitchen counter. Bacteria can grow fast once the outside warms up.

Your Thanksgiving Countdown

A little planning now saves a lot of stress later. Start with the guest list, then build the menu around it.

Evenings are darker since the clocks moved back, as our daylight saving time story explains. Plan any long drives for daylight hours if you can.

  • Confirm your guest list this week
  • Buy or order your turkey by mid-November
  • Move a frozen turkey to the fridge by November 22
  • Shop for sides two to three days early
  • Plan travel for daylight hours if you can

What to Do With Leftovers

Leftovers need care too. Put them in the fridge within two hours of serving.

Use shallow containers so food cools quickly. Eat the leftovers within three to four days, or freeze them for later.

When you reheat turkey, stuffing or gravy, heat it to 165 degrees again. That simple step keeps the day happy and safe.
