A very dangerous tornado hit parts of two towns in Wisconsin, USA, called Appleton and Menasha, on Monday afternoon. The National Weather Service, which is the government group that studies weather, said the tornado was so dangerous that they gave it their second highest warning level, called a “particularly dangerous situation” warning.
What Happened
The tornado stayed on the ground for close to 20 minutes before losing strength over the water. It first touched down near Appleton, then tracked toward the northern edge of Lake Winnebago before finally breaking apart.
Videos from the area show serious damage. Some homes lost parts of their roofs, cars were flipped over, and streets were covered with broken tree branches and other debris. Emergency crews have been going through the damaged areas, checking on people and helping wherever needed.
Damage and Power Outages
The storm caused a lot of damage in the area. Police in Menasha asked people to stay inside their homes, watch out for broken power lines on the ground, and avoid driving near roads that were closed because of the storm.
In Menasha, the local power company said the entire town, home to about 18,000 people, may have lost electricity after a major power line was knocked down. More than 20,000 homes and businesses also lost power in nearby Outagamie County.
Wisconsin’s governor, Tony Evers, said he has been briefed on the storm damage and that the state is ready to help the affected areas.
More Storms Could Be Coming
Weather experts say there is still a risk of more strong storms in the Great Lakes area. These storms could bring powerful winds, large hail (which is like big balls of ice falling from the sky), and possibly more tornadoes in different spots.
