A famous rock and roll singer named Freddy Cannon has died. He was 89 years old. His real name was Frederick Anthony Picariello Jr, but everyone knew him by his stage name, Freddy Cannon, or his nickname, “Boom Boom” Cannon.
Freddy passed away on Friday, July 17, at a care home in Oxnard, California. He had only just found out he had cancer, and he passed away a short time after that.
Who Was Freddy Cannon?
Freddy was born on December 4, 1936, in Revere, Massachusetts, and he grew up nearby in a town called Lynn. As a kid, he loved listening to music on the radio and learned to play guitar. His dad, who drove trucks for work, also played music and sang in local bands, which helped Freddy fall in love with music early on.
Freddy became famous for singing rock and roll in the late 1950s and early 1960s, when this kind of music was still brand new. He had many hit songs, including “Tallahassee Lassie,” “Way Down Yonder in New Orleans,” and “Palisades Park.” His song “Way Down Yonder in New Orleans” reached the Top 3 in both the United States and the United Kingdom, sold over one million copies, and earned a special gold record award.
He also made history with his album called “The Explosive Freddy Cannon.” In March 1960, it became the very first rock and roll album ever to reach number one on the UK album charts.
A TV Star Too
Freddy became well known on television, too. He appeared on a popular music show called “American Bandstand” a record-breaking 110 times, more than any other performer on the show. He also acted in a few movies and TV shows and later wrote a book about his life called “Where the Action Is”.
Famous Fans Who Loved His Music
Freddy’s music was loved by some very famous people. Mick Jagger from The Rolling Stones once said that Freddy’s song “Tallahassee Lassie” helped inspire one of his own band’s hit songs. Robert Plant from the band Led Zeppelin was also a big fan. Even the famous author Stephen King mentioned Freddy Cannon in several of his books.
Friends Remember Him With Love
After Freddy passed away, many of his friends and fans shared kind words about him online.
A friend and radio host named Rich Koz said Freddy was talented, kind, and that he would be missed by everyone who knew him.
Another close friend, a drummer who worked with Freddy for over 45 years, described him as one of the greatest and most genuine rockers of his time. He said Freddy taught him so much about music, and that he would not be the person he is today without Freddy’s help and friendship.
A radio station called Johnny Rock and Roll Radio also shared a message online, saying that rock and roll had lost one of its true pioneers, someone who helped start this kind of music a long time ago.
Freddy’s Family
Freddy is survived by his two children, Conny and Billy, his sister Mary Lou, five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Sadly, his son John passed away earlier this year in April, and his wife, Jeanette, passed away back in 2024.
