Irish musician Glen Hansard has died at the age of 56. He was the lead singer of the band The Frames and had won an Academy Award for his music.
Hansard passed away early Wednesday morning following a motorcycle crash in Dublin, Ireland.
The crash happened at a place called Strawberry Beds in Lucan, West Dublin, on a road between Tinkers Hill and Rugged Lane. It took place just before 4:30 AM. According to police, only one vehicle was involved in the accident. Emergency workers treated Hansard at the scene, but he passed away a short time later.
A Statement From His Team
Hansard’s management company shared the sad news in a public statement. They said his family is heartbroken over this sudden loss and asked for privacy during this difficult time. They also thanked the emergency workers who came to help at the scene.
Irish police, known as the Gardai, are still investigating the crash. They are asking anyone who saw what happened, or who may have dashcam footage from that area, to come forward and share information.
Glen Hansard’s Musical Journey
Hansard was born in Dublin in April 1970 and grew up in a neighborhood called Ballymun. He left school at just 13 years old to begin singing on the streets, performing for people passing by in the city.
In 1990, he formed his band, The Frames, which became one of Ireland’s best-loved rock bands over the years. Hansard also acted in a movie called The Commitments, where he played a character named Outspan.
However, Hansard became most famous for his role in the 2007 film Once. He starred in the movie alongside singer Marketa Irglova, and together they wrote a song for the film called Falling Slowly. In 2008, that song won them an Academy Award for Best Original Song. The film was later turned into a Broadway musical, which went on to win eight Tony Awards.
A Career That Never Slowed Down
Even after his big win, Hansard kept making music. He released several solo albums over the years and worked with other well-known musicians, including Eddie Vedder from the band Pearl Jam. His most recent music, a two-part album called Don’t Settle, came out earlier this year.
Hansard was also known for helping others. He often performed at charity concerts and supported causes to help people facing homelessness in Ireland. Every year, he took part in a special Christmas Eve tradition of singing on the streets of Dublin.
Hansard is survived by his partner, poet Maire Saaritsa, and their young son, Christy.
