Social Security Cap Jumps to a Record $192,300

The Social Security tax cap will rise to a record $192,300 in 2027. High earners will pay Social Security tax on $7,800 more of their wages next year.
Key Points
- The 2027 wage base is $192,300, up from $184,500 in 2026.
- Workers who earn at or above the cap will pay up to $483.60 more in 2027.
- Most workers earn less than the cap, so their Social Security tax will not change.
What Is the Social Security Tax Cap?
The Social Security Administration (SSA) only taxes wages up to a set limit each year. People call this limit the wage base, taxable maximum or tax cap.
Workers pay 6.2% of their wages up to that cap. Employers pay another 6.2% on the same amount.
Any money you earn above the cap is not taxed for Social Security. You can see the full history of the limit on the SSA wage base page.
How Much More Will High Earners Pay?
The cap goes up by $7,800 in 2027. At a 6.2% rate, that adds up to $483.60 more for workers at or above the limit, Kiplinger reported.
The maximum Social Security tax for an employee rises to $11,922.60. In 2026, it was $11,439.
Self-employed people pay both halves, or 12.4%. For them, the higher cap can mean about $967 more in tax.
| Item | 2026 | 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Wage base | $184,500 | $192,300 |
| Max employee tax | $11,439 | $11,922.60 |
| Employee tax rate | 6.2% | 6.2% |
| Medicare tax rate | 1.45% | 1.45% |
Who Will Notice the Change?
Only people who earn more than $184,500 will pay more. If you earn less, your Social Security tax stays at 6.2% of your pay.
People who earn between $184,500 and $192,300 will pay a little more. People who earn above $192,300 will pay the full $483.60 extra.
High earners often notice a jump in take-home pay late in the year. That happens once they pass the cap and Social Security tax stops coming out of their paychecks.
With the higher cap, that break will arrive a little later in 2027. If you work for two or more employers in one year, you may pay too much. You can usually get the extra money back when you file your federal tax return.
