How El-Sayed Won the Big Michigan Senate Race

Democrat Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan’s United States Senate race early on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. He beat Republican Mike Rogers for an open Senate seat.
Key Points
- Abdul El-Sayed beat former Representative Mike Rogers in a close and heated race.
- He replaces Democratic Senator Gary Peters, who did not seek reelection.
- El-Sayed is set to become the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate.
Abdul El-Sayed Wins in Michigan
The Associated Press called the race at 2:27 in the morning, Eastern Time. That timing comes from local television station FOX 2 Detroit.
El-Sayed had declared victory about an hour earlier. At that point, he led Rogers 52% to 46%.
The seat opened up after Senator Gary Peters chose to retire. Keeping it helped Democrats win control of the Senate.
Who Is Abdul El-Sayed
El-Sayed is a physician and former public health official from Ann Arbor. He led the health department for the city of Detroit after the city declared bankruptcy in 2013.
Later, he directed health, human and veterans services for Wayne County, which includes Detroit. That background came from the Associated Press.
This was not his first statewide race. In 2018, he ran for governor and finished second in the Democratic primary behind Gretchen Whitmer.
How El-Sayed Won the Race
El-Sayed ran as a progressive. Senator Bernie Sanders backed him, and he supports a single, government-run health plan often called Medicare for All. He has argued that health care is a human right.
First, he had to survive a crowded Democratic primary in August. State Senator Mallory McMorrow entered the race before him, and the contest stayed close. He won it by a very thin margin.
Next, he faced Rogers, a former member of Congress who once led the House Intelligence Committee. Rogers had the support of national Republicans. The general election campaign turned bitter, with personal insults and sharp social media attacks.
The wider mood also mattered. Republicans faced voter frustration over high gas prices and rising prices, according to FOX 2 Detroit.

Why the Result Matters
Many saw the race as a test of whether a progressive could win statewide in the Midwest. El-Sayed’s win suggests that such a candidate can succeed in a swing state.
His stance on Israel drew questions during the campaign from some groups. Supporters, however, praised his focus on health care and living costs.
His win also marks a first. FOX 2 Detroit noted that he will be the first Muslim elected to the Senate.
What Happens Next
El-Sayed will take office when the new Congress begins in January 2027. Senators serve six-year terms, so his first term runs until January 2033.
He will serve alongside Michigan’s other senator, Democrat Elissa Slotkin, who won her seat in 2024. Michigan’s official results will come from the Michigan Department of State.
